Elton John's Journey
Elton John shows transcendentalist qualities, because of his individuality, self-reliance, and universal soul. Singer, songwriter and composer Elton John, was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in Pinner, Middlesex, England. He taught himself how to play the piano when he was four years old. John is truly an amazing transcendentalist individual. He has done so many things to change his life and the lives of others. His spirit and excitement fills everyone with warmth.
Elton John excelled in music at a young age, and released his first self-titled American album in 1970, making him a huge international star. In 1967, John answered an ad for a songwriter for Liberty Records. He got the job and soon teamed up with Bernie Taupin.John then got his first break as a singer in his 1969 album, featuring songs by John and Taupin. By 1970, John was fully recognized with his first hit “Your Song”("Elton John Biography"). A few months later, Elton gave his first American concert in Los Angeles ("Sir Elton John Biography"). He has a unique blend of pop and rock styles that turned him into one of the biggest icons in the 20th century. This was the start of his journey.
Elton’s individuality was definitely recognized by his style. He dressed in over-the-top costumes and glasses for his elaborate concerts. What he wore was legendary. Keyboard hats and mustard yellow jackets would seem crazy to some people, but low key to him. In an interview, John explained, “I dressed more on the humorous side; because if I was going to be stuck at the piano for two hours, I was going to make people look at me” ("Elton John Biography"). Although he wears crazy costumes, he has toned it down over the years, because “he feels too old for sparkles and sequins” (“Elton John's Style through the Years"). He has never been afraid to express himself as he is. “From his feather-adorned glasses to his Donald Duck suit, John’s outfits and accessories have gotten him as much attention as his music” (“Elton John's Style through the Years"). He has always caught the attention of others and put a smile on their face. John showed to be creative and crazy without worrying how others thought. He was a strong individual, who simply wanted to have fun with life.
Because of John’s self-reliance, he was able to write and construct the majority of his music. With all his success, he then released four new hits in 1973, including “Candle in the Wind.” He wanted to do a duet with a female and chose female vocalist, Kiki Dee. She and Elton’s duet “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” leapt straight to number one on the charts (“Sir Elton John Biography”). He wrote “Empty Garden” as a tribute to his friend John Lennon of The Beatles, who had been killed in 1980. He was able to write a song himself, in honor for his friend and manage to make another great hit. He had also reworked one of his classical songs, “Candle in the Wind,” as a tribute to Princess Diana. “Candle in the Wind,” then proved to be a tremendous success, selling more than 30 million copies that same year. “John also teamed up with Tom Rice, and worked on the soundtrack for the 1994 animated hit The Lion King, and one of the movie’s songs, “Can You Feel The Love Tonight,” brought John his first Academy Award win for Best Original Stong” ("Elton John Biography"). John never gave up on life no matter what was going on. He showed self-reliance through all the hard times and the good times with his incredible work.
John showed strong universal soul near the end 90s. He had changed a lot, because of the bad things he had gone through. Through 1970 and 1980, he battled bulimia and drug and alcohol addiction. He then faced a serious health scare in January 1987. He was on tour in Australia when he had to undergo laser surgery to remove potentially cancerous nodules from his vocal cords. He later said that the problem probably started because of his smoking of too many drugs, including marijuana. He recovered from the surgery, but could never reach the range in his voice he used to have. He continued to use drugs until 1990. Elton then wanted to give something back to the community, particularly in connection with AIDS awareness. This was something that was close to his heart. John cared a lot about people and wanted to help them. With this, he showed universal soul. In April 1990, he performed at a funeral of a friend who had died from AIDS. “Two years later, he did the same thing concerning his American singles and was also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, with Bernie Taupin” ("Sir Elton John Biography").He then performed the Elton John AIDS Foundation. One of the main things in Elton’s cleaned up life, is his dedication to raising AIDS awareness and fund-raising for his foundation ("Sir Elton John Biography"). The Elton John AIDS Foundation believes that AIDS can be beaten. Their goal is to create an AIDS-free future. With enough love, support and creativity, they know this is possible("CREATING AN AIDS FREE FUTURE"). John’s image definitely shows universal soul. He cares about everyone.Elton has a true love for people and wants to do all he can to help them and share his heart.
Elton John definitely showed transcendentalist qualities in life. He showed people to be confident and bold. He proved that people should never care what others think and for them to be comfortable in their own skin.He wanted to get people’s attention and that’s just what he did. He also showed what it is like to be self-reliant. He sang and wrote many songs, mostly by what he felt, or the things he went through. He never gave up, no matter how hard life went for him, or the different pains he went through.
John went through some rough patches and let some things get the best of him, but ended up doing something better for the world. He made an AIDS foundation and is continually doing charities and helping others. With this showed universal sou. John has a heart full of hope and love for everyone and wants to turn the negative things into a positive. He is a true legacy that has more of a purpose than just performing. All these qualities are important in life, because it defines who a person is and how they help the ones around them. It shows people to be confident and do things for others. Elton is a huge part of today’s society and will continue to help change the world.

" Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail". This quote fits Elton John, becaue he doesn't do what society thinks he should do, he does what he wants and is an inspiration to others. Elton John said, "I've only been interested in the artistic side of life". He is a very energetic person, who loves to be different and fun. He doesn't do anything the normal way and definitely doesn't follow the crowd.
