Canadian Shield

In the Canadian shield, there are less than 4 million people living in this region because there it is too much of a large area to settle in as well as too much unavailable land to settle in. The Canadian shield is covered by the world's largest boreal forest. Therefore, most people settle in the south (Toronto and Ottawa). A drop of population occurred in the population when 80 of the mines were closed down.

Physical Region

In the Canadian shield there are a lot of trees and rocks. Because of the Glacier that made Canada what it is today, the region was filled with igneous rock that later turned into metamorphic rock. There are at least 140 mining sites in the Canadian Shield, although when a mine is closed, the area around the town is rendered useless and is closed as well. The Canadian shield is very rich in minerals because it has an abundance of igneous rock containing copper, gold, zinc, iron ore, nickel, and uranium. This region is well above sea level because it is a very mountainous area. The Canadian shield is a continental climate with the precipitation ranging from 755-1015 mm annually. This region has a lot of precipitation in Quebec and Labrador, which makes it have a very good growing season as well as a very short growing season. The Canadian shield has an abundance of trees coming as Birch, Aspen, Tamarack, Black and white spruce, Hemlock, Pine, Balsam, and Fir trees. As a result, Crops don't usually survive. This shows that farming is not a major industry in the Canadian Shield. The only farming industries that occur are dairy farming, Vegetable, and grain farming.

Activities (Hunting)

Hunting is a large industry in the Canadian shield because it provides Fur as a resource although it is unavailable for about 6 months of the year because of Winter.
