The Okefenokee Swamp is a shallow, 438,000 acre 1,770 km, mossy swamp between the Georgia–Florida border in the United States. The Okefenokee is the largest "blackwater" swamp in North America. The swamp was chosen in 1974. The swamp was formed over the past 6,500 years. The swamp is bordered by  Trail Ridge, a strip of elevated land believed to have formed as coastal dunes or an off shore barrier island.

During the two year without rain, many of the trails along the 120 mile long system of trails became unavaliable to men work crews and were overgrown by plants or blocked by fallen trees during and after the Honey Prairie Fire.
