Email Etiquette

By Samuel Harvey

  • Keep it short and to the point. It gets very annoying and frustrating to read a long, rambling email.
  • Use proper spelling and grammar. Don't make people have to work on deciphering every word.
  • Answer as soon as possible. Waiting for someone to reply to an email is very frustrating.
  • Don't forward chain letters. For the most part they are all hoaxes.
  • Read the email to yourself before sending it. It's very easy for the other person to take something the wrong way.
  • Include your name if you haven't emailed them before. If you don't, they won't know who emailed them.
  • Use attachments wisely. Say what they are, and make sure you need to send it.
  • Avoid using the words URGENT or IMPORTANT in the subject line, unless it really is extremely urgent. If you send it with every email, then it loses its value.
