How does a blizzard form?
A blizzard needs three things to form. One thing that a blizzard needs to form is cold air at the surface. Another thing a blizzard needs to form is a lot of moister. The final thing a blizzard needs to form is warm air must rise over cold air. It need to be 10 degrees F or colder. Also winds need to be at least 35 mph to be called a snow storm. Blizzards can also form if and after a snowfall when high winds cause whiteouts (fallen snow blowing around) and snow drifts (huge mountains of snow).
History of Blizzards
One snow storm that happen in the last 10 years would be the Buffalo, New York snow storm. This blizzard got more than 7 feet of snow! There were more than 100 cars trapped during and after the snow storm. The impact of the snow storm: People were stuck and trapped in their cars and homes. Also kids were not able to go to school because they could not clear out roads and driveways. It was also dangerous to leave your home because big piles of snow can fall on you. The snow storm was 45 mph. The snow storm lasted from Nov. 17 to Nov. 21 2014.
Another snow storm that happen was in 1940. This snow storm happened in Minnesota. There was 2 feet of snow. The snow storm started on November 11, 1940. This snow storm lasted around a day long. Some people say this snow storm was an "Armistice day blizzard". Car windows and house windows were destroyed. This snow storm killed around 40 people.
