Pest Control

The article starts off by taking about how the sequence of three wasp species could be extremely valuable in the producing of pest control. A group of 157 scientists, which is led by a biologist named John Werren, recently completed the sequencing of three parasitic wasp species in the family genus Nasonia. Werren stated that if it was not for the parasitoids and other natural enemies in the region, we would all be walking around with pest insects up to our knees. Female wasps of the Nasonia family will seek out specific insects like ticks, and will inject venom and then lay their eggs. The young wasps will then break out of the egg and emerge to eat the host insects. The parasitic wasps attack and will kill the pest insects, but so many pests are so tiny that they can barely be seen. This means that people cannot really notice them and the role in which keeping the pest down makes. Knowing of the wasp’s ability could aid pest control by providing people the information about which insects a parasitoid attacks and giving people the ability to identify parasitoid venom.

This article I found to be very interesting and freaky at the same time. I found it very interesting knowing that wasps keep the pest levels down. I never really enjoyed wasps because I thought all they did was go around and sting people, but knowing this makes me appreciate them more. Instead of running away from them, I can run away from them while thanking them for their duty in the pest control business. I also found this article very freaky because if they wasps did not do their job we would be in pest up to our knees. I would never be able to go outside knowing I am walking into a sea of pest. There are pros and cons to all of this though. The pros are that there are scientists realizing what the wasp are doing and now they are spreading the word to make humans aware of what is going on in the pest control world. Another pro is what the wasps are doing for the world. The wasps are able to keep the number of pest down to a controllable amount. The wasps are able to kill them, when the humans are not because they are too small to be seen. The killing of pest can also be a con as well. Humans do know what the wasp venom looks like or what it can do to you. The venom can be harmful to humans and if people do not know to watch out for it they can be harmed. The wasps are doing a great thing for mankind and need to be appreciated.

Toxic Chemical

This article talks about toxic chemical that are being found in pet dogs. Toxic flame retardant chemicals have been found in the blood in our pet dogs. The level of toxic chemicals in pet dogs is 20 times high than the average human. Indiana University scientists claim pets could serve as “biosentinels” for monitoring the human exposure for toxic chemicals present in household they share with the pet dogs. The presence of polybrominated diphenyl, compounds that are widely used across the world as flame-retardants in household furniture and electronics. These compounds can leave the products and venture into the environment. These compounds have been around for a while and people still do not know much about what they can do to humans.  We do not know how they will affect humans and animals, but they need to be monitored in homes. Researchers have tested 17 dogs to check for flame-retardants in their blood. There were about 2 nanograms per gram of blood.

The article really can put the fear into being inside your home. I would of never of guessed that the things I have in my house can be harmful to my body. Toxic Chemicals are not something a human wants in their blood stream and now the furniture in our homes in putting that into our blood stream. The pro this article is that we are now aware of the toxic chemicals going into our bodies. This means that we can work to fight the toxic chemicals leaving out products. Companies can stop using them or the people and learn to live through the toxic chemical. We also can monitor the dogs that are affected and see what the toxic chemicals are going to do to our blood. The con is that the products that we are buying and keeping in our home can slowly be killing us. With the products letting out toxic chemicals that go into the environment and into our bodies, we are being affected at all times. People need to realize that we are being harmed from the products in our house and learn about the affects it can have.

Planting trees is as bug of a miracle as giving birth one could say. Planting trees gives like to an ecosystem and to the plant. Planting a tree is the reason why humans can survive on the plant. Trees provide the human race with oxygen, shelter, and even shade on a hot day. Trees create more social interactions with people in a neighborhood and give people a reason to smile everyday. I learned we must care and love the trees as if they were apart of our family. Every time a tree is hit by a lawn mower or a bike is chained to the tree, it kills the tree a little, not emotionally, but physically.  The tree is damaged when that happens, but the tree can never recover. To the outside would the tree might looked healed, but it is really just covering up the pain, while still holding it in on the inside. Also, I learned that to plant the tree one must not put soil or mulch around the heart of the tree. The heart of the tree is located around the base where the tree starts to curve. That part of the tree must be open to the outside world; otherwise it can start to die. You will notice this is happening if branches are coming off on the lower area of the tree. This means that the tree is stressed and it needs a caretaker. Lastly, I learned that you do not want to spray a little water each day because that water will not soak down into the roots. One must use a lot of water, so the water can burrow down into the ground to reach the deep root. If the deep roots do not get water, they will make their way to the surface, making it possible for a lawn mower to hit it while cutting the grass. I believe from what I learned I am almost a tree champion.

From what I have learned from the two amazing teachers that came and taught me about tress, I can now take care of trees. If I see soil or mulch around the heart of a tree I will kick it away to give the heart life. When I am mowing the lawn I will stay clear of the tree and its roots to take away the chance of me injuring the precious tree. When I am older and want to plant a tree, I will be able to plant the tree correctly. I will dig down enough to when the shovelhead is even with the ground. Then I will take away the grass surrounding the tree, and water before I put the mulch down. The most important thing I can do it spread the word. I can share what I have learned with peers, family, and strangers who want to know more about trees. Spreading the word and getting people more aware of how to take care of trees will one day save this plant. If everyone knew not to mow by trees and have no grass by trees, more trees will still be in perfect condition. Applying the care of trees into my life will help the world a little bit at a time and making this industrial world, an environmental world again.
