Civil War Journal Entry #1

My name is James Smith.  I was born in 1832 in Springfield Illinois. I work at a local printing company. My life has changed ever since I was drafted into the union army. I mostly spent my days training and living under poor conditions. I am very accustomed to my home and I currently miss it. Even though, I don't have any family of my own, I look forward to returning home as war hero. I fought on the union side because I generally do support the union cause and I am willing to end slavery. I am currently ranked a second class private and I have some experience when it comes to war.

Camp life in the civil war was pretty simple. Soldiers spent most of their war days training and training non stop. They slept in tents and ate food. They played games and relaxed. They sang songs around campfires and told stories. They would drink and gamble. We also had a ton of drills everyday. We learn to kill, fight, run and march nonstop.

Camp life here is not that bad. The food is scarce and most of the time raw or infested with insects. We play card games and drink. We also tell a bunch of stories to pass the time. My favorite food is steak. Sometimes if were lucky we get good stake and we don't have to eat it raw.

Civil War Journal Entry #7

Soldiers in the civil war often got sick by eating bad food, that was contaminated and rotten. They drank dirt water and often starved. When wounded the medics would amputate the wounded arm. Most soldiers died of amputation because of the blood loss. Others died from the war itself.

Civil War Journal Entry #8

When the war ended, I cam back to my house in the north, I was a union soldier and I was proud that we won and I missed my family. This mattered to me because Iwas proud to serve my country. I also was happy because I survived the bloody war and I was really thankful to be back in my home.
