In 1954 the French army surrenders to Vietnam in the battle of dien bien phu. This was important because now Vietnam was independent. However, they needed help with setting up their government.

International peace conference takes place in Geneva and divides Vietnam at the 17th parallel. This was important because in the north Ho Chi Minh lead his communist party. In the south the United states and France set up an anti-communist goverment lead by Ngo Dinh Diem.

In August 1964, Lyndon Johnson told congress that the North Vietnamese patrol boats had attacked 2 US boats at the gulf of Tonkin. This was important because it is what started the U.S. involvement in the war.

Nixon called for Vietnamization to pull the troops out of the war at a slow pace. This tactic was important because at home everyone was against the war and they needed to pull out of the war at a slow pace.
