STS- 51J was the first mission of the Atlantis space shuttle. Atlantis left the Kennedy Space Center on October 3, 1985 and landed on the Edwards Runway on October 7, 1985 The main purpose of STS-51J was to carry a payload for the US Department of Defense. The mission was manned with Karol J. Bobko, Ronald J. Grabe, David C. Hilmers, Robert L. Stewart, William A. Pailes. Atlantis carried the Department of Defense Satellite, and Cargo.
