Play and Learn in the Tech Sandbox
Reflections on Week #1
- We began by discussing our expectations.
- Five students have already used an iPad before. 2 students have never touched an iPad before. 1 student had used an iPad but said he didn't know enough about them.
- We learned how to take care of the iPad.
- We learned how to change settings.
- We learned how to rearrange location of icons.
- Everyone worked on these apps: Move Boxes, Photo Booth, Skitch. Several students started working with: Google Earth, Build-a-body, PBS Kids, Wings and 5 Dice. Students completed an evaluation of every app they used today.
- By doing the evaluations we improved the speed and accuracy of how we write on the iPad.
- With Move Boxes we improved the way we touch the iPad screen AND we learned the importance of reading the directions.
- With Photo Booth and Skitch we created images and manipulated them. We saved some images in Evernote and started to organize our portfolios in Evernote.
- We will try harder to help our classmates learn by using our words and not our fingers when a classmate gets stuck.
Reflections on Week #1
We began by teaching our two new classmates the care and feeding of iPads. For example, we always use two hands to move the iPad. We always use clean hands and fingers on the iPad.We discussed Monday's class noting that we recommended apps to teachers and each other, rated apps, chose apps, created images, planned images, told and wrote about apps to describe them, explained how to use specific apps, solved logic problems, completed forms, explained apps and investigated. (Educators: note the verbs from Bloom's Taxonomy.)
We warmed up our problem-solving skills and fingers with Move the Box. With the iPad native app, Camera, we made short videos then discussed what worked and what did not work.
Next we watched a video about telling stories (making video). We learned about the 4 Ps: People, Places, Plot and Purpose. We listed some possible purposes for telling a story (making a video): retell a story, explain how to do something, describe something, do a biography or autobiography, connect with someone, make people laugh or cry or angry or excited, review something we have already learned, offer advice. We then planned our next video by identifying some of the 4 Ps.We shot and shared a second video and critiqued them.
Later we watched a stop motion video then used osnap! to create our own stop motion videos.
Everyone wrote an evaluation of the Camera and osnap!. Some students used Subway Surfer and Minecraft and wrote evaluations.
Reflections on Week #1 Wednesday
- We started the day introducing the care and feeding of iPads to a new classmate. We also introduced ourselves to her.
- Then we reflected on Tuesday's class. Students proudly explained to our principal that they created video/stories, rated apps, investigated apps, and critiqued each other's work.
- Students then made another stop motion video with osnap!. They spent more time planning their story, creating characters from clay and making conscious choices about the place or location of their story. We shared all the videos and critiqued every video.
- Next we used the Camera or Skitch to take images of faces showing feeling or emotions. Then using Animoto, students took images from their iPads to create a shorter video - about 6-8 slides or images.
- During Sandbox time students used and evaluated apps including but not limited to: Ocean Science, Temple Run, Candy Crush, Where's My Water, Build-a-Body, Google Earth.
- We finished the day with Google Earth and learning how to create a screen shot.
Reflections on Week #1
We explained the care and feeding of iPads and the class expectations.
We reflected on Wednesday's class and reminded ourselves that we created video presentations or told video stories, and we rated and evaluated apps. We compared the apps we used to make videos: Camera, osnap! and Animoto.We warmed up by listing 4-6 things about ourselves in order to prepare to tell a video autobiography. After making the list, and planning how to communicate the ideas on the list, we used the camera and/or Skitch, to create images for the video autobiography. Some students got help from classmates to take pictures. Some students drew images and took a photo of them. Some students used screen shots from Google Earth or from the Internet. Not all of the videos uploaded to Animoto, and that caused some people some frustration.We returned to Google Earth and ThingLink to label some screen shots. Most students found Thinglink useful.Students then requested Sandbox time to explore and evaluate other apps. They tried and evaluated apps like Smule Guitar, Magic Piano by Smule, Free Flow and Temple Runner.
Reflections on Week #2
- Today we began by creating narrated slide shows using 30hands. Several students created images using Google Earth or Photo Booth to include in their slide shows. The students will learn how to post examples tomorrow, Tuesday, June 18, 2013.
- Next we practiced speaking clearly and a little slowly and improving our spelling using Dragon Dictation.
- Then we wrote poems using Word Mover.
- Finally, we drew some
illustrations using didlr.
Reflections on Week #2 Tuesday
We discussed how to limit Google searches with quotation marks and clicking on things like Images.Using results of Google searches, we and 30hands, we made shorts narrated slide shows about Des Moines.Then students drew images using How to Draw Lite and didlr and compared the ease of use of both apps.
