My name is William " rampage" Jackson, I am a confederate sergeant I live in Alabama on a large plation with my wife and five children.  I am fighting because I have a hundred slaves and I do not know what I would if I lost them.

dear son,

right now am in a camp in Washington. Gearnerl McClellan had us clean up camp and have use respect are superiors. Right now camp is the best it has been do to him. He had us build log huts with chimney and a door. The roof is made of cloth from tents. It not home but it is a place to sleep and keeps use drie. I miss you and your mother and can not wait to get back.

In camp for fun we sang around a camp fire, wilted, and played baseball. this made camp life not so bad but it was still bad. the food we had in camp was albatrosses. Of these my favorite was hardtack(a flavorless cracker). All this tasty cracker was is flour, water, salt. yes it was bad but it was better then the rotten meat we got.

I think that James is dead. If his brother is dead i think that he will cry and look for his body. If he is alive i think that they will reunite. I think that seeing a man die will make him more mentally stong or it will destroy him.

In camp many soldiers drank contaminated water leading to fever. also mosquitoes cared multiply deceases such as malaria. In the hospitals the surgeons spread diseases by not washing there hands or tools. the whole camp smells like death.

Dear wife,

we have just gone to battle and there are many casualties. the whole camp is filled with the sound of death. Also along with that is the stench is unbarible. it does not help that most everyone has there last meal on the ground. I can not wait till this awful war is over and I can go back to you.
