Reform Movements

Due to the new social order that encouraged sobriety, industry, self-discipline, and moral order, drinking became condemned as evil. As a result, alcohol consumption dropped. The Temperance movement was not only fueled by religious motives, but was also necessary for a capable work force. Company production suffered from drunken workers, so sobriety led to a more efficient work force.

At the time of the Reform Movement, women broke free from the domestic ideal. The entered the political realm and argued for the right to vote. women felt that God interested for them to have more rights, and they believed that your morals were a reflection of God.

Since the new religious view was that the sinner was free to choose salvation or damnation, people declared war upon slavery. They said slavery was a sin, and you must free your sin by freeing your slave.
