Solving Proportions

Student Taught Lesson by: Alyssa Cooper

We are going to cross multiply to find what each variable represents.

Step #1 - Write Out Problem

~ Write out your problem exactly how you see it with an equal sign. Simple enough. We are going to use the problem down below NOT the one shown above.

Step #2 - Cross Multiplying

~ To cross multiply, multiply from the top to the bottom across to look like an X.                  ~ Multiply 4 by X to get 4x and 3 by 10 to get 30.                                                                ~ Write it as 4x = 30.

Step #3 - Divide by Number Beside X.

Since you have 4x = 30, your going to divide by 4 on BOTH sides.                                      ~ 4x divided by 4 equals X. ~ 30 divided by 4 equals 7.5.                                                   ~ Now you have X=7.5
