During the Heian period of Japanese culture (700-1100), it was a social requirement to be able to  recognize, appreciate and recite Japanese and Chinese poetry. It was around this time when Haikus became popular. Haikus have five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second, and five syllables in the third.

A Ball of Snow: Matsuo Basho

You make the fire
and I’ll show you something wonderful:
a big ball of snow!
