He WAS Surrealism
Dali was born at 8:45 on May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain. He spent much of the time of his childhood in Cadaques, where his parents built his first art studio. He attended the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid. Around this time, Dali grew his iconic moustache. In 1925, he started to gain some notoriety in the art world when he had his first one man show. In 1928, some of his work was shown in the third annual Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh, where he gained international recognition. The following year, he met his future wife and muse, Gala. Dali would go on to become the most famous artist of the Surrealist movement.
