Activity 1

The table shows sound bites from 4 different songs to be used for the 5-minute mashup.

First, graph the BPM as a function of time. Then find the piecewise function for the graph.

Write a function that represents the graph. What type of function is it?

Activity 2

Determine the tempo for 0 < x < 3 by finding the average BPM of all 4 sound bites. What is the average? Round your answer to the nearest whole number. The four soundbites are The average is 122.45.

The tempo for 3 </= x </=5  is modeled by the function y = 121 + 5^x - 3. Using your knowledge of transformations, write a brief summary telling how the graph of y compares to the graph of its parent function. Include a discussion of what the numbers “121”, “5”, and “ -3” mean in terms of this activity.

Y compares to the graph of its parent function because it was moved vertically and horizontally. The "121" or the "k" caused the parent function to move up to 121. The "-3" or the "h" caused the parent function to move three spaces to the right. The "5" or the b caused a growth in not only the parent function but also the "y".

Write a function that represents the graph:

What are the BPM when the song reaches 3.5 minutes? 4 minutes? 5 minutes? When the song reaches 3.5 minutes the BPM is 123. When the song reaches 4 minutes the BPM is 126. When the song reaches 5 minutes the BPM is 1246.

Activity 3

Choose 4 songs to create a 5-minute mashup, and follow the steps you used in Activities 1 and 2. Graph your mashup and write the piecewise function representing the graph.
