Donatello was born in Florence, Italy in 1386 and died in 1466 of unknown causes. His real name was Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bard and his friends and family gave him the nickname of Donatello. He grew up as the son of a craftsman and was educated at the home of the Martellis. He apprenticed for Florence Metals and sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti.
He was later know for his unique styles. It took him a while to initiate the style he is known for. In his last days he went back to Florence, Italy and earned an early retirement. Any work that was unfinished was faithfully completed by his students.
