The British were unprepared and too exhausted for fighting, even though they had warning of the attack. The american army came by a river to maintain the element of surprise. The men divided up firing cannons guns fatally wounding Johann Rall from under his horse. He was trying to rally up the soldiers. He also failed to do so.
Washington knew that British reinforcements were coming and they would be far too powerful to defeat. The army headed the river to retreat back.
