A Glimpse Into Africa

Africa is the worlds second largest continent as well as the second largest populated continent. Africa consists of a total of 6% of the earths surface and they also have 30% of the earth's remaining mineral resources. Some other facts that are good to know about Africa are the fact that all of the countries except for Ethiopia and Liberia were colonized by foreign powers during the scramble for Africa. There are 54 countries in Africa as well as one "non-self governing territory". One other interesting fact about Africa is the fact that about 90% of all cases of malaria in the world are found in and occur in Africa.

African Empires: Benin Forest Kingdoms

The Benin Forest Kingdoms, a.k.a Benin Empire, was one of the major powers in West Africa until the late 19th century located in nowadays southwest Nigeria. Benin was the control for the trade that occurred between the inland people and the Europeans that were on the cost, when the European merchant ships started visiting West Africa starting in the 15th century.

Saharan Trade Routes

The highlighted area in the map is the modern territory of Niger. "Saharan Trade Route Circa 1400"

From the seventh to the eleventh century, trans-Saharan trade linked the Mediterranean economies that demanded gold- and could supply salt- to the sub-Saharan economies, where gold was abundant. Although local supply of salt was sufficient in sub-Saharan Africa, the consumption of Saharan salt was promoted for trade purposes. Arab merchants started operating in the eighth and ninth centuries in southern Morroccan towns like Sijilmasa was where they bought gold from the berbers as well as financed more caravans.

Bantu Migration/Language

Bantu Languages or Narrow Bantu Languages is a part of the Niger-Congo languages. The Bantu languages are a "traditional sub-branch" of the Niger-Congo languages and according to the criteria of the mutual intelligibility there is about 250 different ntu languages. However when taking into consideration dialect and and ethnicity often over 500 different languages can be counted.

The language is most commonly spoken east and south of present day Cameroon. These are the regions that are commonly known as Central Africa, East Africa and southern Africa. The origin of the Bantu language is Eastern Nigeria and or Cameroon and approximately 2000 years ago the Bantu people migrated/spread south and eastwards. When they started migrating this started to introduce new things into their culture like agriculture, and iron working. This colonized much of the continent and this was during the expansion of Bantu.

African Masks

For the African Masks two of the ones that I looked at were the Bombo mask and the Goma Mask.

The Biombo Masks' tribe originates south of the inter-section of the River Luala and Kasai, it is in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Bombo Masks are typically carved out of wood and then colored with a red powder called Tukula. The Tukula powder is made from a camwood tree. The reason that I chose this mask was because of the fact that I like how Geometric the mask is, I also like the fact that the mask has more natural colors to it. The mask is often made from things like coffee beans. For the tribe that these masks are used for they often use them for tribal rituals and ceremonies. On the back of the mask they represent the different hairstyles that the tribe has.

This is what a Traditional Biombo Mask might look like

The other mask that I found interesting was the Goma mask. I chose this mask for the same reasons as I found the Biombo Mask interesting, the colors on both of the masks are very natural and the overall masks are very symmetrical.

The Goma Masks Tribe originates in the Western Side of the Ivory coast going Liberia

African Tribe: Fang

The tribe over all isn't very tall nor very short and they are built fairly strong. They used to live in the northeast a long time ago but then moved from there to the forests in order to farm. The fang tribe is very powerful and had aggressive tendencies and due to this many different ethnic groups of

In the Fang tribe leaders are typically descended from family. The people who grow into the leadership are all from the same family, and this is the family that started the village. These leaders are believed to be able to communicate to their ancestors

Modern Issues:Pirates in Somalia

The Highlighted area is where the majority of the Pirate attacks occur. In the last 15 years Somali fisherman have been arming themselves and forcing themselves onto commercial ships. Due to this issue the East Africa sea's are known as some of most dangerous waters.
