Animism

- Animism began in Africa

-People who worship animism, worship nature and their ancestors. People who follow Animism believe that all things, including animals, plants, rocks, thunder, mountains, and rivers, have spirits. These people also believe that ancestors watch over them in heaven.

-Animism affected culture because the people who are part of Animism have a great respect for nature.

-The people who worship Animism would hunt, and then praise the buffalo, etc. that they had just killed.

Shintoism

-

-Shintoism began in Japan

-People who are part of Shintoism believe that the spirits of Kami are in everything. (This includes the emperor.)

-People who practice Shintoism have a great respect for nature.

-People who practice Shintoism worship mainly at a shrine near Nachi Falls, which is a 436 foot drop. Ancient people believed God resides in the Nachi Falls.

Hinduism

-Hinduism originated in India and stayed in India

-People who practice Hinduism study from the holy text of Vedas.

- The people who practice Hinduism believe in reincarnation, ones soul is reborn into another form after the body's death until perfection is reached.

-This religion affects culture because the people who worship Hinduism try to lead a good life (in thoughts and behavior) in order to keep moving towards perfection.

-People who follow Hinduism believe that all life is sacred and to be loved and revered.

-The people who follow Hinduism have ten commitments:

+Ahimsa- do not harm +Asteya- do not steal

+Satya- do not lie + Brahmacharya- do not overindulge

+Aparigraha- do not be greedy + Saucha- be clean

+Santosha- be content +Tapas- be self-disiplined

+Svadhyaya- study + Ishvara Pranidhana- surrender to God

-The Ganges River is considered the most holy river to the Hindus. This river is said to wash away your sins after a person bathes in it.

Buddhism

-Buddhism originated in India but moved to China, Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia.

-The people who worship Buddhism believe that a person can end their suffering by ending their desires.

-The people who follow Buddhism have learned to accept what life brings to them.

-Buddhism was started by a prince named Mahatma Budh.

-There are four noble truths to Buddhism:

+Everyone suffers

+Suffering is caused by having desires

+If you want to end your suffering-end your desires

+End your desires by following the Eight Fold Path

-Flowers are used in Buddhism traditions to show that life is short, just like the life of the flower.

-Piles of stones are seen in Tibet with " Om mani padme hum " on each stone. Buddhists walk clockwise around this pile, say a prayer, and move on.

Taoism

-Taoism originated in China.

-The holy text of Tao Te Ching is used in Taoism.

-People who worship Taoism follow the way of nature and don't try to change things.

-Taoism affected culture because the people who follow this don't mess with the natural process and accept things as they come.

-Taoism followers refuse to pursue power and wealth.

-Lao-tze is said to be the fonder of Taoism by some people.

Confucianism

- Originated in China

-People who follow Confucianism follow the holy text of Analects.

-Confucianism believes that all people need to know and accept their roles in society

-People who follow Confucianism have a great respect for their parents, elders, and their country.

-Started by Confucius

-During his life, Confucius thought of himself as a failure

-Confucius became a teacher after the death of his mother.

Judaism

-Judaism originated in the Middle East

-People who are Jewish follow the holy text of Torah

-Jewish people are monotheism (believe in one god) and that god will someday send a messiah to them someday

-Jewish people try to follow God's laws (Ten Commandments) so the messiah will come

-Jewish people often worship on Saturday.

-Jewish males wear a kipa, which is a bowl like hat, to keep their heads covered ( a requirement for Jewish males)

Christianity

- Christianity originated from the Middle East

- Christians study the holy text of the Bible

-Christians are monotheism and believe that Jesus Christ was the son of God and that Jesus was the messiah.

-Christianity affected culture because this religion had simple rules that made many people convert.

-Christians believe that the purpose of life is to serve, know, and love God

-Jesus Christ was executed on a cross, after his death people began to think he was the messiah

Islam

- Islam originated in the Middle East

- People who follow Islam study the holy text Koran

-Islamic followers are monotheism and believe that they must follow Allah in all things and that Mohamed was the messiah

-Islam affected culture because religious laws were so important that they often became political laws in that nation.

-People who follow Islam worship in mosques

-The symbol for Islam is a crescent moon and star.
