Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad

Mini Research Assignment

Harriet Tubman was born on January 29, 1820; when she was a young teen she defended another slave and her overseer injured her, with a two-pound weight. In 1844 Tubman feared that she would be sold on the plantation along with other slaves, so she decided to run away. After Harriet Tubman escaped from slavery she helped free slaves for 10 years. Throughout those 10 years she helped approximately 300 slaves escape from the South. She became well known for leading slaves to freedom. Tubman became known as the "Moses" of her people. Many slaves dreaming of freedom sang spiritual songs referring to Harriet. She was never captured and never failed to deliver her "passengers" to freedom. Harriet had a natural death at the age 93. She passed away on March 10th, 1913. (PBS) (BIOGRAPHY)
