Town Center 5th Grade
The fifth grade educators are so thankful for the opportunity to lead and educate your fifth graders this year! We are in the last stretch of the year, and it has been fantastic so far!
We had a great time at Sky Ranch. Thank you so much to the chaperones that were able to come with us and to all of our 5th grade parents that helped prepare their kids for the trip.
We will be sharing pictures with you soon! Also, you may visit Twitter and search the hashtag #tceskyranch to see pictures from our trip.
Exciting End of the Year Events!
Talent Show Auditions were on Monday, April 27th.
If we have not seen your costume yet, or if we need to see your audition again, we will be setting up times ASAP.
Please remember that you and your group should continue to practice.
The talent show will be Thursday, May 28th and Friday, May 29th.

Please remember all outfits must follow the school dress code.
After the graduation, there will be cake and a short reception.

5th Grade Video
As is tradition, we will have a short video to celebrate the learners' memories at Town Center. We will view this video during Graduation.
One of our wonderful volunteers, Shelby Bennett, has offered to put the video together. Please see the following message from her:
Just a reminder that we are still in need of photos of your kids & friends at TCE events to use for the 5th grade graduation movie, particularly from Kinder (2009-2010), First (2010-2011) and Second (2011-2012) grades. (Those years we are short.) We don't want any 5th Grader to be left out, so please take a minute to submit pictures!
The photos MUST be at TCE or TCE-sponsored events such as:

What Are We Learning?
Math & Science
This week we have started our Finance Projects. Students chose the project they were most interested in from the following topics: Home Design, Balancing a Checkbook, Surveys & Product Orders, and Payroll.
Please remember as part of your child's math homework, he/she should be on Reflex Math at least 3 times per week. Students not completing this for homework will be asked to work on Reflex during recess or Texan Town. If your child is cannot get his/her reflex done at home he/she is welcome to come to before school (7:20) to work on it.
As we prepare for a visit from the author of Mr. Ferris and His Wheel, the students will be working on a design challenge to build an amusement park ride.
We will also be observing insects (darkling beetles) and arthropods (roly-polies) to understand about environment preferences and life cycles.
Language, Literacy, & Social Studies
In writing, we will be working on two expository essays in response to the following prompts:
- Explain what has made your time at Town Center special.
- If you could be any famous person, who would you choose to be? Explain why you would like to be this person.
In addition, we will write our own versions of the poem, "If I Were in Charge of the World" by Judith Viorst.
In reading, we will begin new Junior Great Books stories, focusing on theme and summary.
In Social Studies, we will continue to learn about the United States Constitution and the branches of government. We will work through engaging History Alive units and Mind Mission projects.
IBM E-Week w/ Mr. Hill
Here are a few links that Mr. Hill thought the 5th graders might be interested in.
What is a patent: US Patent and Trademark Office,
Romelia Flores who is an IBM employee in the Global Solution Center in Coppell. She is an IBM Distinguished Engineer (just one of 500 or so out of the 400K employees), IBM Master Inventor and a member of the IBM Academy of Technology. Here is a website to read about Romelia's patents.
Here is Romelia Flores on being a Wild Duck and another video which her daughter appears with her on a panel for Women in Technology. Finally, the highest level of technical recognition in IBM is an IBM Fellow which is listed in the link.
