Carl Sandburg

Carl Sandburg was born in Illinois in 1878. He had to work from the time he was a young boy. He had to quit school after the 8th grade to do a series of odd-jobs. He had to deliver milk, lay bricks, and shine shoes before he became a hobo in 1897.

Sandburg won 3 Pulitzer prizes in both poetry, and history. He was known for his use of free-verse poetry, and for writing a biography on Abraham Lincoln.

The fog comes
on little cat feet.

It sits looking
over harbor and city
on silent haunches
and then moves on.
