What is the Black Death?
The Black Death is a 14 century germ from China that killed 1/3 of Europe - a rough estimate of 75 million lives. The Black Death's methods of spreading and the current health problems of Europe also dedicated to these deaths. It infected everyone, children, adults, rich, poor, etc...
What are the symptoms?
The plague was not just mentally devastating, but also physically devastating. The main problem with the plague is the big bulges called buboes. They were big black lumps all over the body. They were the size of oranges if the infection was serious. Another devastating symptom was how the bacteria attacks the Lymph System (major help to the immune system). When you first get the plague, you get something like a flu, fevers and headaches. It slowly evolves to those buboes, chills, and weakness.
How did the plague spread to Europe?
The plague arrived to Europe from the Black Sea at the Port of Kaffa in October 1347 with ships infected with it. Originally, it was from Central Asia and China where Genghis Khan's empire, the Mongol Empire, brought it. The plague was first recorded in 1338/1339 in Central Asia. It reached China and India in 1346. The Mongols did not shoot corpses with the plague to infect Europe.
The Tree of the Dead
We chose to draw a tree with dripping black drops because it shows how the black death was spreading and killing many people. All the black represents the black plague, how people died, and how fast it spread. It also represents how many people it killed and how the hands of the people infected had their hands blackened.
