The Secret Life of Bees

The Secret Life of Bees is a heart-felt story about a lost and adventurous young girl who struggles to fit in and in order to cope with her abusive father and the memory of her deceased mother, she writes stories. So, she runs away with her nanny, Rosaleen, to a small town in South Carolina in hopes to find more information about her mother.

“The queen, for her part, is the unifying force of the community; if she is removed from the hive, the workers very quickly sense her absence. After a few hours, or even less, they show unmistakable signs of queenlessness.”

This book is perfect if you want a thought-provoking, yet effortless read. I personally connect with this book because it manages to give me the feeling that I’m back home in North Carolina, sipping on sweet tea, with my family. The secret Life of Bees is full of descriptive imagery, and it has a strong and interesting story that keeps you reading and locked to the plot. I think the book isn’t extremely complex or profound; however, it does contain a strong story and attempts to bring up some serious issues in the time periods society.
