The Evolution Of Turtles
By: Kristie White
The first turtles are believed to appear in the Triassic Period in the Mesozoic Era about 220 million years ago.
It was believed that they are the only surviving branch of the ancient Anapsid which included multiple branches. Anapsid is an animote whose skull does not have openings near the temple.
Turtles in the Triassic Period appeared in Thailand and some several appeared in Germany. Some turtles were in Argentina, China and now turtles are some of everywhere. Paleontologists believe the reason they find turtle skulls and other parts of turtles in places where turtle weren't living is because the streams carry them to their final resting place.
They say turtles had teeth but somehow lost them.
