Carlos Santana is perhaps the most famous Mexican-American guitarist ever. He pioneered the fusion of rock and Latin American music with his band Santana.

Carlos Santana was born July 20, 1947 in Autlán de Navarro, Jalisco, Mexico

Carlos learned to play the violin at the age of 5, and didn't learn guitar until he was 8. When he was still young his family moved to Tijuana and then to San Francisco, where Carlos attended middle and high school. There were very few Latinos in American rock and pop music, but he was highly influenced by Richie Valens

Santana and his band gained critical acclaim and widespread popularity in 1969 after their performance at the now legendary music festival Woodstock. Woodstock took place in White Lake, New York

Their first album, Santana released in 1969, went triple platinum
He has won 10 Grammy Awards and three Latin Grammy Awards
He is received a life time achievement award in 2009
Many artists have been influenced by Carlos Santana, including Prince and Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20
He is considered one of the greatest and most innovative guitarists of all time.
