Using mobile devices as a way to help students understand content is a new and increasingly important practise in Education. Here are a variety of applications that I have found that are really useful in elementary classrooms.

Rocket Speller

Rocket Speller is an application where students aged 3-7 can practise spelling high frequency words in the form of a fun and engaging game. This app can be used on any apple or android product and it is free as well.

How can this app be integrated into an elementary classroom?

Teachers can use this app to observe where students are at in terms of spelling ability. Teachers can also use this app as a way for students to practise their spelling in an exciting and intriguing way.

Grade 1: Have students work at spelling stations and this app can be used at one of the stations using a mobile device.

Grammar Jammers Primary Edition

Grammar Jammer is an app that uses songs and rhymes to help students from Kindergarten to grade five learn their grammar. Grammar is one area in  the language arts subject that can be difficult to learn and this app really helps those students who need that extra help

How can this app be integrated into an elementary classroom?

This app can be used at both an individual level and at a group level. Teachers can also use this app to introduce grammar to students in a novel way that students would really respond to.

Grade 3: Students use this app in partners to make sure that their stories have proper sentences ( nouns , adjectives etc.)

Tellagami

Tellagami is an app that allows users to create a simple character and setting and also create a short animated clip of the character.  This app is a great way for students to show their creative story writing skills.

How can this app be integrated into an elementary classroom?

This app can be used as an alternative way for students to create a mini story or piece of writing. This a great way to incorporate the multiple means of action and expression component of UDL.

Grade 4: Students can use this app to tell the teacher and their classmates about themselves on the first week of school.

Park Math

Park Math is an app that is catered towards students from ages 2 to 7. It allows students to learn and practise their early operation skills in math including addition, subtraction ,sorting and patterns through fun and educational games.

How can this app be integrated into an elementary classroom?

This  app is excellent for when students are practising their operation skills. Students at this age are not used to homework but having students use this app at home will not only result in students having fun but they  can also solidify their understandings of operations

Grade 3: Students can use this app as a math station or when they finish other math work

VideoScience

VideoScience is an app that contains over 80 videos on science lessons and experiments that students and teachers can observe and perform. It is a great application to use when learning about particular concept in science and can be used as a way to engage students in an alternative way.

How can this app be integrated into an elementary classroom?

Teachers can use this app to introduce an experiment that students will be exploring and participating in.

Grade 3: Students will watch a video explaining the parts of the ear before using this knowledge to create their own ear creation.

Comment Stream
