When did immigration become an issue in the U.S?
Immigration policy and laws have been influenced by race. Negativity play a role on immigration. In the past race and immigration had no connection. Whites have always dominated. American fails to see the value of immigrants.
Similarities of immigration from the 19th and 20th century are dislike, mistreatment, unappreciated, poverty, housing limitations, and limited resources. Privilege based on skin color. American is likely to reject one who is not of white skin color. The main similarity I see is that then and now the immigration population seeks the US for a better life style, better future, to provide for loved ones back home etc.
What do you think of when you hear immigrants? Mexican? For the most part yes. Politicians promise all sorts of changes for minorities and do not deliver. Media does not help and policies are broken or bent depending on who is involved.
