The subject mainly addressed is FREEDOM

The message of the poem " Lift Every Voice and Sing " is that slavery times were hard but they got through it and just to praise the lord for getting them through those hard times.

Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us , (L-6-7)

Stony the road we trod, (L-11)  

Stony the road we trod,

Bitter the chast'ning rod,

Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;

Yet with a steady beat,

Have not our weary feet

Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; (L-3)

Led us into the light, (L-26)

Trod - Past particple of "tread"

Harmonies - Agreement of concord .
