Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS)

What it is & Where it is from

Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus or MERS is an illness or specifically a type of coronavirus. It originated in Saudi Arabia in 2012 so that's why it has Middle East in the name. Though in later investigation it has shown to have it's first cases in Jordan.

About the Country

Saudi Arabia is a Middle Eastern country. Saudi Arabia has a harsh dry desert climate with very high temperatures. The land there is mostly uninhabited and they have problem with getting to bodies of water even ground water is scarce. It's known as a rich third world country. They have decent healthcare.


Most patients develope severe acute respiratory illness with symptoms of fever, cough, and shortness of breath. About 3-4 out of 10 patients die from the disease, there have been 249 confirmed deaths since July 2012 . The patients start having signs of symptoms in 5-6 days, but can range from 2-14 days.

How it Spreads

The disease spreads from one ill patient to another by contact. There is no evidence of a sustained spreading through the community. There have also been signs of camels having the disease. It's possible that a person may become infected by having close contact with the infected animal. There could be more animal links to the virus, but much information is unknown.

How it Effects: Economy

This causes the government to spend money on things like medicine and treatment to help stop it. If it gets worse it could cost millions.It could also take money for the more deadliest diseases.It could also take most of the world money that we could use for more important things.

How it Effects: Culture

Due to the muslim pilgrimage to Mecca this can increase the chances of the disease spreading.It could also make the human population go down.It could also make the world a harmful place.It could also make the world  a fearful place.
