Queen Victoria was born.

1837

Her uncle, William IV, passed away, and Queen Victoria became queen at the age of 18.

1840

Victoria fell in love and married her cousin from Germany, Prince Albert.

1844

The Irish Potato Famine begins.

1846

Repeal of Corn Laws, which began an era of free trade.

1851

London's population goes from 1.1 million in 1801, to 2.7 million. Also in this year, the first telegraph cable was laid across the English Channel.

1853

The Crimean War begins in this year.

1855

The newspaper stamp act was abolished.

1856

Crimean War ends. Also in this year, Henry Bessemer invents the blast furnace, creating a mass production of steel.

1861

Death of Prince Albert, and Victoria's mother, resulting in Queen Victoria becoming very unsocial, and barely leaving the palace.

1878

The first electric street lighting in London.

1885

Karl Benz invented the first automobile.

1901

This is the year of the death of Queen Victoria, at age 82.
