The 52 Albums that define my love for music
Week 26/Album 26
Who: The Pharcyde - Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde
Why: This is my all time favorite hip-hop record, and probably one of the best Hip-Hop records of all time.
Where: I saw the Pharcyde at Lollapalooza 1994 and 1995. 94 was all 4 of them, and 95 was 3/4. They have toured as halves, but I just cant bring myself to see them like that.
My dear My dear My dear.....
In early 1993, I was in 7th grade and for my birthday I got a CD player, and was allowed to pick out 2 CD's to buy. This was the first CD I ever owned. The entire CD was bought for 2 reasons, the first is "Passin Me By" which I heard on the radio, and the 2nd was because of the cover. Little did I know at the time, that this was going to be my all time favorite Hip-Hop album.
As every song went through, I was more blown away at how good these songs were. They were all fun, happy, lighthearted, and slightly relaxing. It was lyrically brilliant and perfect jazzy beats in the back. It talked to me in every way possible. Bizarre Ride has always been a "calm down" record for me. It's the one constant record that I can throw on any day, and any time and it will make me a happier person. This record has stuck with me since the day I bought it. It stood the test of time through many other hip-hop phases, and personal phases in my life. My friends and I played this record constantly through High School, college and even to this day. I know every word that's on this album.
That is the original CD. The case is long gone, but I still have this. I have no idea how I've been able to hang on to it for over 20 years, but I have. It really doesn't play much because the back is totally scratched up, but I'm glad I still have it. My mom made me put RK on the CD so that I wouldnt lose it, but I ended up putting eyes on it, trying to be cool. Still kinda funny to look at.
While this album is my stand alone favorite, their other (full group) record, "Labcabincalifornia" is also a must have. Its a little more toned down that "Bizarre Ride" but still brilliant.
The Pharcyde haven't been the actual "Pharcyde" for almost 20 years. I wish they would all come together one more time. They tour sometimes, but in 1/2's. It's just not the same.
I know most of my friends and peers would agree with me that this is one of the best hip-hop records of all time, but in case you still haven't heard it:
