Halloween begins on the night of October 31st. The word was shortened from Hallow's Eve. It is believed that on Hallow's Eve, spirits come out and people dress up in masks and costumes to copy the spirits. Trick-or-Treating is a tradition that children do for fun. Children go house to house to get candy from the owners of the house. The night designated for Halloween was called Beggars Night. The activities are trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting 'haunted houses', and carving jack-o'-lanterns. It is believed that the fire would attract insects and then the insects will attract bats. Bats are one of Halloween's attributes. The trick in trick-or-treating is to trick the homeowner to play a trick on them if the treaters don't get candy. Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain.
