Misinformation Article Summary
In Lies That My History Teacher Taught Me: Everything Your American Textbook Got Wrong, the author, Alexander Saxon, writes about how revised textbooks misinforms American youth about the country they live in. According to our textbooks, our country is a place where, in its history, has made some mistakes; there was slavery, sexism, racism, etc. Our textbooks, however, sugar-coat all of these things. They teach us that, for example, that slavery was abolished for the sake of freedom while, in reality, there were several undertones of white supremacy and capitalism in the anti-slavery movement. They downplay the problems of minorities and women and glorify the white man as a hero who had a couple of struggles along the way. According to the article, revisionists are trying to repaint history for the sake of maintaining a positive image of our country.
