In 2005, Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, Louisiana. In that storm was six year old De'Monte Love. De'Monte, along with 6 children, (cousins, friends, and siblings.) were separated from their parents. Mrs. Love and friends had to make a life-changing decision. To stay in the flooding apartment building, or get onto a helicopter without her children and fly to a shelter in San Antonio. The decision was made that she was going to put the children on the helicopter and fly them to safety. Days went by, and Mrs. Love had not been reunited with her sons. Six year old De'Monte was left wandering around devastated New Orleans protecting these six younger children. De'Monte was then picked up by work crew and taken to a shelter where the work crew was able to contact the children's parents and reunite everyone once again.
On October 22, 2012 Hurricane Sandy tore through New York and parts of New Jersey. Rockaway, New York was one of the hardest hit areas of the storm. 14 year old Ariel lived in Rockaway.
