The Real Pochohontas
By Cole Kennedy
The Powahatan people claimed a strip of land along 100 miles of coastline, on what is now Virginia and North Carolina.Back home, the English learned about the Indians from stories told by sailors and fisherman who had come to the New World. The English, who wore enough clothing for three people, were shocked by the customs of the Indians, who wore almost no clothing and worshiped strange gods. The English were told that part of their mission in the New World was to civilize these people and convert the Indians to Christianity.
