Preparation for My People to People Trip

When I received my People to People invitation letter in the mail, I was ecstatic. I couldn't believe I had been given the opportunity to go on the same exact trip my aunt went on when she was in high school. The first thing that came to my mind when thinking about what could prevent me from going on this trip was the cost.

The first meeting I attended for People to People was the information meeting. At the meeting I got to meet my delegation leader and learn more about the People to People program. I received introduction letters from the leaders, an application book, and the latest issue of the People to People magazine. In the application book was an interview questionnaire I had to fill out and 3 recommendation I had to have completed before my interview. The People to People magazine has different articles in it related to People to People.

Beginning to Fundraise

To raise funds for my trip I decided to send letters out to family, friends, and businesses with help from my mom. In about 2 or 3 weeks, I had signed about 200 letters. My mom folded the letters to fit inside the envelopes and put addresses on the envelopes. I then put each letter inside its envelope and sealed them. I think I had the taste of glue stuck in my mouth for at least a week!

Receiving Contributions

I decided to call my grandparents (I have quite a lot of them) to see if they would be willing to contribute money towards my trip, and what amount they were willing to contribute. I was overjoyed when my dad's mom told me she would contribute $1,000 to my trip. She sent me $250 for my deposit the next day. My dad's grandma sent me $200, along with $20 from her significant other, after I talked to her about my trip. When I went to my mom's step dad's house to tell him about my unique opportunity, he gave me $750 for my trip. One of his sisters gave me $40. My mom's mom's close friends V&L gave me a donation of $25 after receiving one of my letters in the mail. A great aunt and uncle of mine sent me $50 in the mail after receiving a letter. Another great aunt and uncle gave me $20 when I was visiting some of the family. Two of my teachers gave me donations after receiving a letter I gave them; one of $10, and the other of $50. My neighbor and close family friend gave me $40 when I went over to his house and hand delivered a letter and told him about my trip. Of course I stayed to chat for awhile ("you know you're a Minnesotan when...") A friend of my parents sent me a $40 donation after receiving a letter in the mail. If I total the amount of money I have received so far it would be $1,545!!!

My First Orentation Meeting

I had my first orientation meeting on November 23rd. We did a bunch of ice breakers to get to know each other. Just from meeting all the people in my delegation for the first time, I think that they'll all be great friends and will be so much fun to spend three weeks with in Europe. We learned more about the People to People Program. We got a fundraiser to help raise money for some of our trip. The things I get to sell in the fundraiser include; pizzas, specialty meats, cheesecakes, pies, fudge, coffee and tea, and cookie dough. We went over the delegate protocol which talks about dress code, passports, the medical health form, packing, electronics, home stays, and much much more.

Update!!! 12/12/13

I haven't been on tackk in a really long time! Since then I have raised a lot more money. My total right now is about $2,500!!! I've been trying really hard to raise the money for the trip of a lifetime and its finally starting to become a reality that I will be able to reach my goal.
