Causes of the American Revolution

FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR

1754-1763

WHAT IT WAS- Funding of this war led to immense national debt for Great Britain and they thought the Americans should help pay which led parliament to pass the stamp act.

REVOLUTION CAUSE- This caused the revolution because the colonists were mad due to the taxes being imposed on them by the British and this caused them to realize their differences.

CURRENCY ACT

SEPTEMBER 1, 1764

WHAT IT WAS-  Was were the British prohibited issue of new bills being issued or reissued.

REVOLUTION CAUSE- This made the colonists angry because they did not want the British controlling anther aspect of their lives.

STAMP ACT

MARCH 22, 1765

WHAT IT WAS-This was a new tax imposed on all American colonist which made them pay tax on all paper products such as legal documents, licenses, and newspapers. This was in attempt to raise money for the British.

REVOLUTION CAUSE- Because Americans declared that they have the same rights as English which meant they could only be taxed by their own representatives.

QUARTERING ACT

MARCH 24, 1765

WHAT IT WAS- It required colonists to house British soldiers if the barracks provided were too small to house all the soldiers they had to accommodate the soldiers in local inns, liver stables, ale houses, victualing houses, and houses of sellers of wine.

REVOLUTION CAUSE-This led to the American revolution because the colonists were becoming angry having to care for the British soldiers.  

SONS OF LIBERTY

AUGUST 14, 1765

WHAT IT WAS- It was a group of shopkeepers and artisans who were angry

about "taxation without representation" and just the British in general.

REVOLUTION CAUSE- The reason why the sons of liberty were a cause of the American revaluation was because Boston was put under so much authority and were a pressed to a point were they starved and there was nothing they could do about it or anything which made them rebel against their government.

BOSTON MASSACRE

MARCH 5, 1770

WHAT IT WAS- It was a riot that began when fifty colonists attacked a group of British. Their Captain Thomas Preston called in more soldiers who were also attacked leading to the British firing into the crowd of civilians killing three on the spot and several others later from wounds.

REVOLUTION CAUSE- This angered the colonists because their own people were killed by the British who they were housing and being ruled by.

BOSTON MASSACRE DIAGRAM

TEA ACT

APRIL 27, 1773

WHAT IT WAS- Passed by parliament in order to try and save the East India Company from bankruptcy. They lowered British tea to a much lower cost than the colonists tea and the American tea merchants could compete with the new price putting them out of business.

REVOLUTION CAUSE- The colonists were angry that the British were putting some of their tea merchants out of work because they could not compete with the low prices so they started to retaliate with a boycott.

INTOLERABLE ACT

MARCH TO SEPTEMBER 1774

WHAT IT WAS - THE ACTS

Boston Port Act- Was an act to stop the landing or shipping of goods, wares, and merchandise into the harbor of the town Boston.

Massachusetts Government Act- This was an act to regulate the government the Massachusetts bay Colony in New England.

Administration Of Justice Act- Was an act for impartial administration of justice if anybody questioned any thing they did in execution of law or to suppress riots tumults in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in New England

Quebec Act- This was to make effective provisions for the government in the Province of Quebec in North America

REVOLUTION CAUSE- This caused the Americans to become angry wanting to rebel because they were being oppressed by the king which made them want t be freed from the intolerable acts that were oppressing them.

BOSTON TEA PARTY

DECEMBERD 16,1773

WHAT IT WAS- Night of December 16, 1773 the Sons of Liberty boarded three ships in the Boston harbor and dumped three hundred and forty-two chests of tea overboard

REVOLUTION CAUSE- The Boston Tea Party made the colonists upset afterwards because of the acts that were inflicted onto the colonists as a form of punishment leading to revolt due to the unthinkable things the British were doing.

LEXINGTON AND CONCORD

APRIL 19, 1775

WHAT IT WAS- A series of horseback riders(Paul Revere, William Dawes, and Dr. Samuel Prescott) warned the countryside of the British coming. The Colonial militias also were organized to defend settlers from attacks by French or Native Americans. Also the British made the Americans very angry because their was American blood shed on American soil.

REVOLUTION CAUSE- This made the colonist angry because American blood was shed on American soil and they were attacked by the British who were ruling them and taking care of them.
