Bullfights in Spain.

By Ethan and Caleb

How did Bullfighting start?

Although the fighting of bulls dates back to Roman times, bullfighting festivals have existed for around 300 years. To celebrate special occasions such as royal weddings and military victories the first bullfights were created on horseback. Records suggest killing bulls for public entertainment also took place in England in ancient times. Today, bullfighters, called matadors, fight against the bull on foot. We also have bullfighters that fight bulls on horses.

What does the bullfighter have to do for training?

The bullfighter’s coach has to work with the bullfighter on positioning and his equipment. He has to train the bullfighter with various drills to get him ready for the arena. The bullfighter has to wear comfortable clothes with protective gear over it. He also has to wear cleats to run in the arena if something bad happens.

A bullfighter costume

A bullfighter or matador has to wear a cowboy like costume. It is usually gold and blue or red. The bullfighters would also have to wear a white shirt under the suit that goes over their protective chestplate. The have a tie and cleats to run around in the sand. They would also get a red sheet over a bar that they hold to get the bull to attack. The bull attacks the red and the bullfighter needs to prevent himself from getting hurt.

The events in a bullfight.

Usually there is a parade at the beginning of a bullfight. There are a few people riding on horses in the front, these people will carry flags signifying that the bullfight is about to start. These people are called picadors. The matadors would enter the arena at the back of the parade. The matadors enter behind the banderilleros. The banderilleros usually come in with trumpets. The parade parts and the matador would enter the middle of the arena. Then the bull would get his entrance, and the fight would begin.
