Mrs. Vande Hei's Newsletter
December 8-12th

It is hard to believe that the holidays are just around the corner. I am sure you all have been busy in your homes getting ready for the long anticipated event and mini-break from school. Your children's excitement is beginning to unfold at school and we are doing our best to grab their enthusiasm and use it to be productive within the classroom. Thankfully, we have been able to be outside and enjoy the snow during recess and burn off some of our energy! Read on to see all that we have been up to in our kindergarten classroom!

By now, we have learned 20 "Heart Words" and continue to practice them daily. These are high frequency words that your child reads often in books. Please remember to ask them what their heart words are for the week so you can practice at home. Our focus this week was on the letter "G". We read a lot of gingerbread books because there are so many different versions. We talked about the different story elements and compared how the versions were alike and different. We also made a gingerbread house for our characters so we could retell the story. Remember to keep practicing the reading strategies and discuss them with your child when you are doing your 20 minutes of reading!

This week, we focused on our "teen"numbers with an introduction to our teen book. We also did some assessing with counting to 100 by 1's, 10's, and 5's. Please keep working on this at home. We used the Smartboard to integrate technology and found different fun and interactive games to play that focused on our teen numbers and counting to 100. That was fun!

Social Studies

Our focus this week was on community. We talked about the different types of workers in a community and the different buildings that we see in a community. Then, staying with the gingerbread theme, we made our own gingerbread community. The students chose what type of building they wanted to make and then were given supplies to create their structure. Our buildings are down in the kindergarten wing of the school so we could be part of their "Gingerbread Town".

There are many different holidays that are celebrated this time of year. The kindergarten team is doing "Multicultural Presentations" this week and next week. Each class rotates through the different kindergarten classrooms for 45 minutes to learn about a different holiday that is celebrated during this time of year. Ask your child which holidays they learned about this week!

Ginger kid Glyph

Our week wouldn't be complete without creating our own ginger kid glyph. The students had to follow a set of directions to complete their glyph and then they could be unique and add their own special touches. These glyphs will be on display by our classroom for awhile because they are just too cute to send home quite yet!
