United Nations Award

How was the Award significant?

Canada received a United Nations award for sheltering world refugees. The Nansen Refugee Award is awarded annually by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to an individual, group, or organization in recognition of outstanding service to the cause of refugees, displaced of stateless people. It was established in 1954. Canada itself is the key player in this issue. Canada sheltered many world refugees. It affected Canada as a nation because we were recognized in supporting refugees around the world. We came together as a community and helped the ones in need. This topic is political because it is relating to the state, the body politic, government, public administration and policy- making. The strongest candidate are those who have gone beyond the duty, who have demonstrated perseverance and courage, and who have personally, directly and significantly helped people, and that’s what Canada demonstrated.
