Vocab (Chapter 11)

Abiotic factor- a non living item or thing that influences or affects the ecosystem around it.

Biotic Factor-a living thing, as an animal or plant, that influences or affects an ecosystem

Ecosystem-Community of organisms that live in a particular area along with the Nonliving(Abiotic) Enviorment.

Habitat-an Enviorment that provides what a certain organism needs to live and function well.

Organism-Any living thing

Population-all the members of one species living in the same area

Community-all the different populations that live together in a particular area

Classification-the process of grouping things based on their similarities

Taxonomy-the scientific study of how living things are classified

Cell-basic unit of structure and function in living things

Cell membrane- a thin flexible barrier that surrounds cell and controls which substances pass in and out of a cell

Cell wall- a rigid supporting layer that surrounds the cells of plants and some other organisms

Organelle-a tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within the cell

Tissue-group of biological cells that perform a similar function

Organ-a grouping of tissues into a distinctstructure, as a heart or kidney in animals or aleaf or stamen in plants, that performs a specialized task.

Unicellular-an organism that consists of only one cell
