Vanessa Karwan Leads Turnarounds at California Schools
About Vanessa Karwan
An educational consultant with proven expertise in leading school turnaround programs, Vanessa Karwan is the President of Core Learning Consulting, Inc. and the Director of Professional Development for TIDES (Transformative Inquiry Designs for Effective Schools and Systems). In this role, she provides professional development based on research and evidence to school administrators, instructional coaches, and teachers, meanwhile conducting empirical studies on turnaround schools and problem-based learning strategies. Vanessa Karwan brings experience gained leading school transformations at the primary and middle school levels to her work at TIDES.
Ms. Karwan has made significant contributions to two schools in the Escondido Union School District (EUSD) in California. At Felicita Elementary School, where she served as turnaround coordinator and district network coach, she achieved a 48-point increase on the Academic Performance Index (API). While an assistant principal at EUSD’s Mission Middle School, Ms. Karwan scored a 109-point API gain through implementing English language, literacy, and enrichment programs.
Prior to her work with EUSD, Vanessa Karwan performed duties as an English learner coordinator for Solana Vista Elementary in California’s Solana Beach School District. In 2009, she completed her Ed.D. at University of California, San Diego with a dissertation titled "Understanding Teacher Beliefs with Reflective Tools."
