Charles Sumner: Most awesome person of the Civil War
Evidence: He fought for civil rights.
Warrant 1: On August 26, 1852 he delivered his first major speech titled with a popular motto "freedom national; slavery sectional."
Warrant 2: as one of the Radical Republican leaders in the post war senate, Sumner fought for the equal rights and voting rights to the freemen on the grounds that "concert of the governed" was the basic principle of American Republication.
Warrant 3: Sumner never saw his support for civil rights as hostel to the south, on the contrary, he had always contended that a guarantee for equality was one condition essential for true reconciliation.
