The majority of Americans did not want the United States to fight the Vietnam War. Even though young men lost limb and life, the soldiers that came home were hated. This was known as the Anti-War movement.
The reason the United States got involved was because of the fear that communism would spread.
The war didn't start with a lot of fighting. The United States crept slowly into this war. We first began sending money to France to help them defeat the Vietnamese Communist troops.
President Johnson was in office at the time and was afraid the soviets would take over.
