Byzantine Empire


How was it created? It was the eastern half of the old Roman Empire.

Byzantine Empire Compared to the Roman Empire-The Byzantine Empire's  capital was Constantinople, unlike the Roman Empire, whose capital was Rome.
-The Byzantines were Eastern Orthodox(Christian). The Romans were Roman Catholic(Christian).
-The Byzantines spoke Greek, the Romans spoke Latin.
-The Byzantine Empire grew strong and lasted for 1000 years. Rome fell into the "Dark Ages".

IMPACT ON RUSSIA:
Religion: Eastern Orthodox spread and became kniwn as Russian Orthodox.
Trade: Many Byzantine ideas were introduced into Russia, such as the Cyrillic Alphabet, Artwork, such as Mosaics, Religion, and Architecture.
CONTRIBUTIONS TO OUR SOCIETY:
-Justinian's Code: Laws of the Byzantine Empire based on the "Twelve Tables" of Roman Law. It became a basis for laws in many European Nations.
-Art and Architecture: This usually supported the Christian Church.
-They also preserved Greek and Roman Culture, such as the knowledge, art, and ideas.

WHY DID THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE LAST SO LONG?
It lasted so long because they had a very organized government, the emprie did not get too big, and they minded their own business.
