post one: welcome to the blog
This tackk / blog will be a documentation of my adventures while in Kuujjuarapik! I expect there to be many fantastic pictures of northern Canada! I also expect there to be some whining from me about the cold, and how it is awful and exhilarating all at once!
To begin, we need to know where Kuujjuarapik is in reference to the rest of the world! Kuujjuarapik - as described by my new principal - is the Florida of Nunavik. I will need to confirm/deny this statement once I arrive. So far? I am eager to believe it is true! The meaning of Kuujjuarapik is "little great river" in Inuktitut. The Great Whale River flows on the southern side of the community. (Can I say I expect to see a whale? Yes, I think I can.)
Kuujjuarapik is located on the eastern shore of the Hudson Bay. It is north, but there are communities that are even further north than that! Kuujjuarapik is located on Cree reservation land, and because of this, has more than one official name. Kuujjuarapik is also known as Whapmagootsui (meaning "where there are whales" in Cree) and Poste-de-la-Baleine in French.
I know that the post has read like a report so far - and probably will for some time, as I gather more information about my soon-to-be home! I am still hunting down more and more information about Kuujjuarapik. I am keen to share my experiences! There is a link below for those of you that would like a little more information. : )
