The American Dream
My American Dream
Well, My "American Dream" (Though I don't believe in the whole "American Dream" thing; I don't think that it actually exists, but), I guess you could say is quite simple. I want to be able to attend a college with a course for programming or digital design/ animation, to eventually be able to live with my fiancee in our own house/ apartment, to find a good career within my major, adopt a pet (Like a cat or a dog), and maybe eventually start a family. It's nothing that is too exciting, just simple. It's not so much a dream, as it is a hope or wish. (Because in reality, most dreams don't come true)
To me, there is no such thing as "The American Dream". This is most likely because I live and was born in America. To people from other countries, this may be what they dream of doing; what they wish to do in the future. But, to someone who lives in America, I just don't see it.
The American Dream in The Great Gatsby:
James Gatz (Jay Gatsby)
"And as I sat there brooding on the old, unknown world, I thought of Gatsby's wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisy's dock. He had come a long way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in that vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night."
Since Gatsby grew up in a poor family, and Daisy's parents didn't approve of him, he wanted the same amount of wealth that the Buchanan's had, which he did achieve.
Gatsby eventually had the money to build himself a luxurious house across the bay from Daisy. He looked at the light at the end of her dock longingly, waiting for her to come back to him.
Daisy finally wanted to go back to Gatsby, thus continuing his dream. Though, Gatsby was asking too much of Daisy, and got upset in the process.
Gatsby's dream (kind of) comes true. The phone at the house rings, and Gatsby is to believe that Daisy was on the line. Gatsby died thinking that he was going to be with Daisy; In the end, that was all he wanted.
