Mayan Civilization

People

              The Mayan civilization developed a hierarchical government which was ruled by kings and priests. In their society the people lived in independent city-states. Where the majority of the Mayan civilization were divided in two different parts, they were the peasants and the townspeople. They worked as skilled artisans, officials, and merchants. The rest of their civilization consisted of kings, priests, nobles, and slaves.

              The majority of their civilization were peasants. The peasants did most of the farming, they grew corn and during the growing season the men would spend almost all day working in the fields. When they weren't farming, they would help build pyramids and when wars came men peasants would have to serve as soldiers sometimes.

Region

          The area of the Mayan extended throughout the southern Mexican states of Chiapas, Tabasco, and the Yucatán Peninsula states of Quintana Roo, Campeche and Yucatán. The Maya area was also throughout the northern Central American region, including the present-day nations of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and western Honduras.Their region was broken into two separate parts, the lowlands and the highlands. The lowland region is rainy and dry, While the highland region has a string of volcanically active mountains.

Food

              The Mayan civilization mainly farmed cocoa trees to make chocolate, and ate cornmeal, cocoa beans, and the fruit from the cocoa trees. They also liked to eat avocados, Micheladas, corn tortillas, and Poc Chuc. The Poc Chuc was well conserved meat with salt that it's slow-cooked pork combined with orange juice and vinegar. Then a Michelada infuses cerveza with lime, coarse salt, pepper, and shots of Worcestershire and/or Tabasco sauce, served in a chilled, salt-rimmed glass.

Tools and Weapons

Shelter

             In the Mayan Civilization their common form of housing was walls made of stone or mud. These huts were covered with hay, this provided protection from things like rain and snow. The homes usually had one or two sets of stairs usually long and wide. The decorations that used to decorate their homes would have been sculptures along the stairs, sometimes these homes would have very simple basic design without stairs or sculptures.

             The Mayan tools were usually made of stone and tree bark. The tools that they used were fire and basalt axe, but they usually didn't use fire often because it was to dangerous. The rocks were made of flint, obsidian, granite, limestone and quartzite. The Mayan's used the bow and arrow, blowguns, spears, axes, knives with blades of volcanic glass, and spear-throwing slings called ‘atatls’ as weapons.

What happened to the ones who were captured during the war by the Mayan's?

             Because their were often in war, the Mayan's captured some of the enemies soldiers. The soldiers that who were captured in the battle became slaves. While the nobles and war leaders were used for human sacrifice.

Writings and Calendar

                 The Mayan civilization created a sophisticated writing system based on hieroglyphs or pictures. The people wrote on bark, folding it like an accordion, then covering the outside with a thin plaster. Their writing was also carved onto clay, jade, bone, shells, and stone monuments. While their calendar was known as the Long Court, it was based on a belief in cycles of creation and destruction. They used two different systems for measuring time, one was based on a solar calendar and the other system was based on a sacred calendar. Where only the trained priests could read and use the calendar to foretell to tell the future.
